The Lion & The Lake, LLC ("The Lion & The Lake," "we," "us," or "our") runs thelionandthelake.com and the programs sold through it. This policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, and what we do with it.

I wrote this in plain English on purpose. If anything here is unclear, email me at [email protected] and I will explain it.

The short version

We collect your name and email when you buy something or sign up for our list. Our payment processor handles your card, and we never see the full number. We only send you marketing email if you asked for it. We use Google Analytics and the Meta Pixel to understand how people find us. We do not sell your information to anyone. You can leave the email list any time, and you can ask us to delete what we hold about you.

The Lion & The Lake, LLC is a single-member limited liability company organized in the State of Michigan. Elizabeth Reynolds is the sole member and is responsible for how your information is handled.

The information you give us

When you join our email list, we collect your name and email address.

When you buy a program, we collect your name, email address, and billing details. Your payment card is processed by our payment provider. We receive a confirmation that the payment succeeded, along with the last four digits and card type. We never see or store your full card number.

At checkout there is a box you can tick to subscribe to our email list. That box is optional and separate from your purchase. Buying a program does not put you on our marketing list. The next section explains exactly what that means.

When you take part in a program, we collect what you choose to write in the private community space: your posts, your replies, and anything you upload. We also collect answers you give in worksheets or forms hosted on our site.

When you join a waitlist, like the Founding Cohort Waitlist, we record that you joined and when. Joining a waitlist is always something you do yourself, by clicking through and signing up. We never add you to one automatically because you bought something.

When you email us, we keep the message so we can answer you and refer back to it later.

The three kinds of email we send, and how to stop each one

This trips people up, so here it is plainly.

1. Transactional email. Receipts, password resets, and access details. We send these because you bought something and you need them. You cannot unsubscribe from these while you have an active purchase, because they are how you get what you paid for.

2. Program email. The daily notes during a challenge week, with a link to that day's lesson. These are part of the program you bought, not marketing. If you want out of them, email us and we will remove you, and you keep your access to the material either way.

3. Marketing email. The weekly email, announcements, blog posts, reminders about upcoming rounds, and news about other programs. We only send these if you asked for them, by ticking the box at checkout or signing up through a form on our site. Every one of them has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. One click and you are off, and it takes effect right away. Unsubscribing from marketing never cancels a program you paid for.

Waitlists are their own thing. If you join the Founding Cohort Waitlist, we will email you about that cohort, including when enrollment opens, because that is the entire point of joining it. That is true whether or not you are on the marketing list. You can leave the waitlist at any time by emailing us.

The information collected automatically

When you visit our site, some information is collected without you typing anything:

Your IP address and approximate location, at the city level
Your browser and device type
Which pages you visited, in what order, and how long you stayed
The site or link that sent you to us

This happens through cookies and similar technologies used by our website platform and the analytics tools below.

The tools we use, and what they see

Our site runs on Kajabi, which hosts the website, the checkout, the course material, the community space, and our email list. Kajabi processes your information on our behalf as our service provider.

Payments are handled by our payment processor. They receive the information needed to charge your card and are responsible for protecting it under their own privacy policy and the card industry's security standards.

Google Analytics tells us how many people visit, which pages they read, and roughly where they come from. It uses cookies and reports to us in aggregate.

The Meta Pixel is a piece of code from Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, that records when someone visits our site or completes a purchase. We use it to understand which of our posts and ads bring people here, and to reach similar audiences. Meta receives this information and uses it under its own data policy.

If you would rather not be tracked by these tools, most browsers let you block cookies, and Google offers a Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. Blocking cookies does not stop you from using our site or your program.

What we do with it

We use your information to:

Deliver the program you bought and give you access to the community space
Send you the daily emails and materials that are part of a program you joined
Process your payment and issue refunds
Answer your questions
Send you marketing emails, if you asked for them
Keep track of waitlists you joined, and what those lock in for you
Understand how the site is working and make it better
Keep records we are required to keep, including for tax purposes

We do this because you asked us to, because we need to in order to give you what you paid for, or because we have a legitimate business interest in running and improving a small company.

What we do not do

We do not sell your personal information. Not to advertisers, not to data brokers, not to anyone.

We do not rent or trade our email list.

We do not add you to the marketing list without your say-so.

We do not share what you write in the community with anyone outside it, except as described in the next section.

What you share inside the community

This one matters more than the rest of this page, so please read it.

The private space is private from the internet. It is not private from the other women in the room. Anything you post in a program community can be read by every other member of that program, and by me. It is not encrypted, it is not anonymous, and I cannot control what another member does with something you wrote. Post accordingly.

Please do not share detailed health information in the community. Not your diagnoses, not your medications, not your test results. These programs are education about how the nervous system works, not medical care, and the community is not a confidential medical setting. If something feels too private for a room of people you have just met, it probably is.

The Lion & The Lake is not a healthcare provider and is not covered by HIPAA. People sometimes assume that anything wellness-related carries medical confidentiality protections. It does not. What you write here is protected by this policy and by the community rules, and not by health privacy law.

I will not quote you publicly without asking first. If something you write would make a good testimonial, I will email you and ask, and I will take no for an answer with no awkwardness. Nothing you post gets used in marketing unless you say yes to that specific use.

How long we keep things

We keep your account and purchase records for as long as you have access to a program, and afterward for as long as we need them for tax, accounting, and legal purposes. In the United States that is generally seven years for financial records.

We keep email list information until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it.

We keep community posts as long as that community space exists. If you ask us to delete your posts, we will, though replies other members wrote may remain with your name removed.

Keeping it safe

Our site runs on Kajabi, which maintains its own security protections including encryption in transit. Our payment processor meets card industry security standards. We use strong, unique passwords and two-factor authentication on the accounts that hold your information.

We will be honest with you: no small business, and no large one, can promise that a system will never be breached. What we can promise is that we collect as little as we reasonably can, we do not sell it, and if something happens that affects your information, we will tell you promptly.

Your choices and your rights

Wherever you live, you can:

Ask what we hold about you. Email us and we will tell you.
Ask us to correct it if it is wrong.
Ask us to delete it. We will, except for records we are legally required to keep, like transaction records for tax purposes.
Leave the email list at any time, using the unsubscribe link or by emailing us.

To exercise any of these, email [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days, and we will not treat you differently or charge you more for asking.

If you live in California, you also have the right to know the categories of personal information we collect, the purposes we use it for, and the categories of third parties we share it with. All of that is described above. You have the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising beyond the Meta Pixel described above. You may designate an authorized agent to make a request for you.

If you live in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you have rights under the GDPR and UK GDPR, including the rights of access, correction, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection to processing. Where we rely on your consent, including for marketing email, you may withdraw it at any time. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. Please note that we are a small United States business and your information will be processed in the United States.

Children

Our programs are for adults. Our site and our offerings are not directed to anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we will delete it.

Links to other places

Our site links to other websites, including our social media pages. Once you follow a link away from us, this policy no longer applies. We are not responsible for how other sites handle your information, and we would encourage you to read their policies.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle your information, we will update this page and change the "last updated" date at the top. If the change is significant, we will tell the email list about it rather than hoping you notice.
